You might have heard of “スタイル” in Japanese English. Do you know exactly what it means and how to use it?

It means “figure”. It is used to describe your body shape. It doesn’t mean your fashion sense. In Japan, we have a culture of complimenting people who have a great figure.

There are some people who mention that a person who they are talking about lost/gained weight. However, some other people might feel uncomfortable when you talk about their appearance. It depends on individuals or how close they are.

Meg and Amy are catching up for the first time in a while.

  • Meg:
It’s been a while. How have you been?
I’ve been great, thanks. Hey, you look great! Have you lost weight?
Yes, I lost 3 kilos in 2 weeks. I wanted to get in shape so I went on a diet.
    Amy:
Great! I’ve been putting on weight lately. I'm going to follow your lead!
Meg’s boyfriend is choosing which jeans to wear for work.

  • Meg:
Are you going to wear the loose fitting jeans?
    Tom: うん。
    Yeah, why?
Although you have a great physique, those pants make your legs look shorter.
    Tom:
    But they’re comfortable.
